Meditation and NSDR are two different tools
They get used interchangeably and they should not be. One is associated with structural change in the brain over weeks of practice; the other shifts your autonomic nervous system inside a single session. Knowing which one you need is most of the benefit.

Meditation: the slow, structural one
Sara Lazar’s 2005 MRI work found that 8 weeks of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction was associated with measurable thickening of the prefrontal cortex, insula and anterior cingulate cortex — regions involved in attention and interoception. The key detail is the timescale: this is an 8-week-plus effect, not something a single session delivers.

NSDR: the fast, autonomic one
Non-Sleep Deep Rest — Yoga Nidra, body-scan and similar guided protocols — shifts autonomic balance toward parasympathetic "rest-and-digest" dominance within a session. That makes it the right tool after hard training or in a mid-afternoon dip, where a 20-minute seated meditation is not what you need.

The inflammation finding
Mindfulness practice has been associated with reductions in NF-κB — a master regulator of the inflammatory response — and in pro-inflammatory cytokines including IL-6 and TNF-α.

What the timer gives you
Set any duration, choose a soundscape, and get an optional halfway bell so you can stop checking the clock. Ending bells are gentle rather than an alarm. Like the interval timer, it keeps running if you put the phone down and leave the screen.
Common questions
How long should I meditate?
Around 20 minutes daily at a consistent time is the pattern used in the studies associated with structural brain changes, which required 8 or more weeks of regular practice.
What is NSDR?
Non-Sleep Deep Rest — Yoga Nidra, body scans and similar guided relaxation. Unlike seated meditation it shifts the nervous system toward parasympathetic tone within a single 10–20 minute session.
Is the meditation timer free?
Yes. It includes soundscapes, a halfway bell and custom durations, with no account required.
